It’s important to identify the myths that you are being asked to believe. The only way to counter the training that you have received by being asked to believe myths is by practicing beliefs that are opposite to the myths.
This is what is meant by affirmations:
- affirm that you have been subjected to a myth
- affirm that you do not want to believe the myth any longer
- write down a belief that is the opposite of the myth
- practice saying your opposite affirmation until you believe it
Affirmations are often thought of as “magic” like incantations or “manifesting” things in the universe. In fact, the “magic” is based in you practicing a belief until the actions you take in your life are in line with this new belief. It doesn’t happen by “magic” but by real changes happening in your life. You may need to develop an action plan for the more insidious or complicated beliefs. For example, if you really believe that you just need to work harder to meet unreasonable expectations, start with the countervailing affirmation, then work backwards. What do you need to change about your life to be more in alignment with your affirmation?
